Why can't I see the catalog now?
The Catalog of Holtzapffel Lathes is not yet complete. A team of developers have created a prototype version on spec that demonstrates the scope of the project in an effort to gain support to complete it. You can view a demo of this prototype online now.
What will be included in each lathe listing?
The Catalog of Holtzapffel Lathes details the provenance and specifications of 2,557 Holtzapffel lathes including condition and configuration of each outfit, photos, sale information, location and more (see privacy note above). In addition, it provides a complete Holtzapffel history, including biographies, genealogy, timeline of notable dates, factory addresses, factory signatures, and other documents. Also included are photos, trade catalogue descriptions, bibliography, glossary of terms, and links to related resources.
In addition, the web-based version would allow an online community to join together, entirely confidentially, and share their knowledge, photos, and other details.
Will the catalog be available online or in print?
The Catalog of Holtzapffel Lathes will be created as an in-print publication, a DVD, or an online publication; your support will determine which ones are produced. The editors of this project are donating 100% of their time; your support only funds the cost of obtaining rights to photos, data entry, creating press-ready files for the in-print or DVD publication, production and mailing of the in-print or DVD publications, and/or the setup and maintenance of a secure online membership-only website with searchable catalog database for the online publication.
All you have to do is pledge your support to determine which format is produced. You don’t need to actually give anything until the campaign reaches a tipping point, at which time funds are collected and the Catalog of Holtzapffel Lathes will be created within 90 days – in-print, as a DVD, or online. (And you can resign from a campaign any time before it tips and be charged nothing, so we encourage you to support all three versions in an effort to make at least one of them a go!)
How is the budget for the Catalog determined?
The online version budget is based on these costs:
- Database configuration
- Data entry
- Server/Site setup
- Interactive AJAX search programming
- Site maintenance
The print or DVD version budget is based on these costs:
- Data entry
- Design and layout
- Press-ready file creation
- Printing / duplication
- Mailing
What is "thepoint.com" and why are they involved?
The Point is an organization that lets anyone start a campaign to organize, fundraise, or persuade. Here's how it works: People pledge to give money or do something collectively; members join, but do or give nothing until the campaign reaches a "tipping point" of support; once the campaign tips, members take action, confident that the project will be completed. And you can resign from a campaign any time before it tips and be charged nothing.
Why should I pledge my support?
In addition to receiving a copy of the print version, DVD version, or online access to The Catalog of Holtzapffel Lathes, this publication will provide (some items dependent on the format created) –
- the world’s most comprehensive catalog of Holtzapffel lathes with up-to-date documentation of provenance, history, and inventory.
- a community for owners, enthusiasts, and historians specific to Holtzapffel ornamental turning equipment.
- photos of the variety of Holtzapffel lathes and apparatus produced from 1795 to 1914.
- an interactive online database search that can answer questions such as:
- how many lathes still exist
- how many of a particular kind of lathe were made
- which ones have been recently restored
- which are most complete – that still exist, or no longer exist, or were ever made
- where are the greatest number of lathes
- how many lathes are in museums vs. in the hands of private owners
- what is the oldest lathe still in use
- what percentage of all known lathes are in use for ornamental turning
- were there more lathes manufactured than those listed in the register
- do any lathes share the same number
- how many lathes were not numbered
- insights into manufacturing trends over the 119 years of production.
- a way to reunite parts that have been separated from their original lathes.
- a gauge of current sale price trends and valuation models.
- and more...
